How Electricity Bills & Tariffs Work

How Electric Utilities Calculate Your Monthly Bill

Electricity bills are calculated by combining four distinct tariff components:

1. Energy Volumetric Charge (kWh)

Total electricity units consumed multiplied by tiered rate slabs or Time-of-Use rates.

2. Fixed Daily Standing Charge

Daily connection fee for maintaining physical power lines, poles, and metering infrastructure.

3. Peak Demand Charge ($/kW)

Commercial billing component based on your single highest 15-minute power spike.

4. Fuel Adjustment & Local Taxes

Fluctuating wholesale fuel surcharges passed directly through to consumers.
